They work very differently—and choosing the wrong type for your conditions can ruin your experience.

2. What Is a VLF Metal Detector?

VLF (Very Low Frequency) detectors use continuous wave transmission.

Strengths:

  • Excellent target discrimination

  • Lightweight and energy-efficient

  • Ideal for parks, fields, and coin hunting

Weaknesses:

  • Struggle in highly mineralized soil

  • Reduced depth in extreme conditions

Best for:

  • Beginners

  • Coin and relic hunting

  • European inland sites

 

3. What Is a Pulse Induction Detector?

PI detectors send powerful pulses into the ground.

Strengths:

  • Extreme depth

  • Handles mineralized soil extremely well

  • Excellent for gold and beach hunting

Weaknesses:

  • Very limited discrimination

  • Heavier and more power-hungry

Best for:

  • Gold prospecting

  • Saltwater beaches

  • Highly mineralized ground

4. Which One Is Better for Europe?

For most European detecting:

  • VLF detectors are the practical choice

  • PI detectors shine only in specific environments

Unless you hunt:

  • Gold-rich soil

  • Black sand beaches

  • Extreme mineralization

VLF will give better results overall.
